The aim of this awareness and prevention campaign is to further increase awareness and educate MMU staffs and students about Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and related diseases. HPV is the common virus that causes cervical cancer. Many people would've probably heard or came across the word cervical cancer but many are still lacking of accurate information about the disease. According to the 2nd report of the National Cancer Registry, after breast cancer, cervical cancer is the 2nd most common cancer in Peninsular Malaysia 2003.
HPV can cause more than just cervical cancer. Certain types of HPV can also cause vulvar cancer, vaginal cancer and genital warts in females. HPV also can cause genital warts in males.
At least 50% of sexually active men and women will get HPV infection in their lifetime. The highest rates of genital HPV infection are found in adults 18-28 years of age. Worst of all, both males and females can transmit the virus without even knowing it.
Genital warts are cauliflower-like growths at the genital area and it is highly contagious. About two-third of people who have sexual contact with an infected partner will develop them, usually within 3 months. About 25-67% of cases have been proven to recur within 3 months after treatment.
The good news is, today, both males and females can prevent HPV infection through HPV vaccination and healthy lifestyle.
